Canada’s LGBT Purge
(Travelling Exhibition)
Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Winnipeg, MB
Love in a Dangerous Time explores the persecution of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals in the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, and federal public service from the 1950s to the 1990s. Known as the “LGBT Purge,” this government policy destroyed thousands of careers and caused severe psychological harm and lasting injustices. Survivors challenged the Canadian government in court, ultimately ending the Purge and paving the way for future generations to live more openly and authentically. This exhibition highlights personal stories of discrimination, resilience, and activism, while also fostering discussions about ongoing struggles for equality.
Origin Studios was awarded the contract by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to design three exhibits that focussed on the LGBT Purge: a 4,000 square foot travelling exhibition, an 800 square foot travelling exhibition, and a permanent pop-up installation in the Museum’s Canadian Journeys Gallery. Origin was responsible for all exhibition and graphic design for these projects, and worked closely with in-house interpretive planners, curators, and the media team to develop these exhibits over an 18-month period.
The images here show the 4,000 square foot inaugural exhibition set in the Canada Museum for Human Rights’ first-level temporary gallery.
